To make sure that you are making the right career choices, planning and preparation is essential. You must ask yourself some questions, and have a good understanding of what you need to do to realise the answers. In any given industry there will ultimately be other questions to ask yourself such as training opportunities available, or how transferable your skills are to other areas, however if you can answer the following questions you will be in a much better position to expand on them, giving your job search the focus it deserves to get you the right move, and not just another job.

Questions you should ask yourself:

  1. What are my strengths and weaknesses?
  2. What is my personality like and what aspects of my career suit this
  3. What aspects of my education / career so far do I enjoy the most?
  4. Where do I want to be in one, three, five and ten years from now?

When you can answer these questions, you should research and plan the direction you need to take to make these achievements, broken down into manageable steps.

You may wish to consider:

  1. Is further training required to get to where I want to be and if so how do you go about this?
  2. Is there anybody I know currently working in my chosen career that I can spend some time with or talk to?
  3. If you have no experience learn as much as you can about your desired career by researching using the internet or you local library.
  4. Speak to a recruitment consultant who recruits for that area and who can give an insight into the job market in that field..
